‘Comrade Detective’: Welcome back, cheap ’80s action!

Do you miss 1980s buddy-cop movies and TV shows? How about a bad dubbing of a foreign action flick? Well, miss them no more!

The new Amazon exclusive streaming series Comrade Detective has all the above.

The trailer begins with Channing Tatum receiving a VHS tape of an old, long lost Romanian television series. When he pops in the tape (using the same VCR we have right here at DRUNK TV headquarters), the fun begins!

Set in 1983, Tatum and others dub their voices over (apparently) Romanian actors starring in a faux vintage action-thriller send-up of the genre.

And best of all? It might be just as un-PC as those old early ’80s schlockfests! (Don’t hold your breath…but we can dream, right?)

According to its IMDB description, the Romanian government created the country’s most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, “a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism.”

While investigating the murder of a fellow officer, the detectives unravel a plot to destroy their country “that is fueled by — what else — but the greatest enemy: Capitalism.”

I’ll definitely be checking out this series. (I pay enough for my Amazon Prime subscription; I should use it for something.)

We can’t live in the ’80s again, but it might be fun reliving one of that great decade’s greatest genres through Comrade Detective.

The satire streams August 4, 2017 on Amazon.
